Director of Learning Design
Carly is a former social studies teacher with a passion for inquiry-based learning and civic engagement. In and outside of the classroom, she’s collaborated with many national and state organizations to provide high-quality, rigorous curriculum that empowers teachers and students. As the Director of Learning Design with Newsela, she works with the team to provide resources that support teachers in creating authentic, meaningful learning experiences for their students. Carly earned her PhD in Education Sciences from the University of Kentucky.
Social Studies Teacher, Grace M. James Academy of Excellence
Summer currently teaches 7th grade social studies at The Grace James Academy of Excellence in Louisville, Kentucky. Before teaching in Louisville, Summer taught high school history, civics, and psychology for 3 years in Versailles, Kentucky. She has been working to implement rigorous, inquiry-based instruction that is accessible to ALL students since she graduated with her MA in Secondary Education from the University of Kentucky. Since she has started teaching at The Grace James Academy of Excellence, Summer has worked to develop a world history curriculum for her students that is Afrocentric and Gender Specific for young girls in Louisville.
