Dan Cogan-Drew

Dan brings twenty-plus years of professional experience spent working towards a more perfect union of teaching, learning and technology. Prior to Newsela, Dan was the founding Director of Digital Learning at Achievement First Public Charter Schools, where he spearheaded the integration of digital learning technologies across the network. He began his education career in Teach for America and went on to teach in public and private schools, as well as in the US Navy. He holds degrees from Wesleyan University, Brown University, and Tufts University.

Dr. Emma Humphries

Chief Education Officer, iCivics

Dr. Emma Humphries joined iCivics as Chief Education Officer in February 2016. Emma began her career in education as a classroom teacher in north Florida where she taught all levels of American government, American history, and economics. It was there she first learned the power of innovative learning tools, oftentimes digital, that allow students to engage with important content and make meaning of otherwise dry concepts such as federalism and limited government.

Jane has been an educator for 32 years. Her research interest is in the treatment of culture in textbooks. Jane is married to Dr. Darren Purcell and together they have four children, four cats and a dog. Jane is originally from southwest Florida and loves both the swamps and beaches of her home state. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking, outdoor activities, and reading.
